| This Sunday, June 9, National Children's Day, the Pasadena Arts Council and the Friends of the Children's Center Committee will sponsor a benefit for the Children's Center for the Arts. Titled "A Creative Collision - Children Meet the Arts" the noon- to-5 p.m. event will be held at 1095 E. Colorado Blvd., the Pasadena corporate offices of Holmes Body Shops. A family- oriented afternoon of activities is planned. Multimedia workshops, offering an exciting range of activities, will be open to children and young people free of charge. Local restaurants and bakeries have donated food and beverages to be on sale throughout the afternoon. An exciting lineup of entertainment will feature music and dance from many cultures. Drawings will be held for a long list of fine prizes donated by area businesses. A silent auction of paintings, sculpture and multimedia art donated by Pasadena-area artists will be open to bidders from noon to 4 p.m. Art created by Children's Center for the Arts students will be on display, with a selection of paintings by the students offered for sale. Collectors should be sure to come and view the auction collection. It's a chance to add art work by a noted or emerging artist to your collection and make a contribution to the arts education of Pasadena-area youth. There is no admission charge and proceeds from the drawings, art auction, food and beverage sales will be donated to the Children's Center for the Arts toward expenses for the 1996-97 visual and performing arts educational program for third and fourth grade students in the Pasadena Unified School District. A partial list of participating businesses includes Green Street Restaurant, Pie 'n Burger, Burger Continental, Domenico's Restaurant, Beadles and Pasadena Cafeterias, Twin Palms Restaurant, Souplantation, Takes the Cake, Amigo's Mexican Restaurant, BFI, Sparkletts, Firestone Tires, Kids Kuts, The Ice House, Nails by Tammy, and Le Papillion. The Children's Center for the Arts is sponsored by the Pasadena Arts Council with the support of the PUSD Board of Education. |
Students attend classes at the Center, located on the former McKinley Junior High campus on Oak Knoll at Del Mar, as part of their school day. Sessions are six weeks in length for fourth graders, five weeks for third graders. Two schools are served in a session. Once each week for a two-hour period, the combined classes from two participating schools are divided into small groups. Under the guidance of artist/instructors, selected for their expertise in their field and skill in working with children, the students participate in a variety of hands-on arts experiences including dance, drama, drawing, painting and multimedia art. In the first full year of operation, the 1995-96 school year, the center served over 900 students from four local schools. Tracy Holmes, wife of Holmes Body Shops owner Tom Holmes, formed the Friends of the Children's Center Committee to assist in volunteer recruitment and fundraising events for the Children's Center program. An artist herself, Holmes believes strongly that the arts belong in every child's educational experience. In addition to the discipline and creative processes the arts add to one's life skills, early exposure to the arts promotes development of the artists and audiences of the future. Mrs. Holmes has also encouraged the creation of an art gallery in the Colorado Boulevard Holmes corporate offices. Exhibits of Children's Center work and art from other Pasadena-area school students are featured. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Saturday during regular business hours. Everyone is encouraged to attend the "Creative Collision." Even if you don't have children of your own or they are grown, the enthusiasm the young people show for an opportunity to use their imagination and creativity will leave you with a better view of today's youth and a stronger faith in the future. |
