| Never underestimate the power of a talented , caring wife! Tracy Holmes convinced her husband, Tom, owner of Holmes Body Shops, that the interior remodeling of the historic building housing the Pasadena auto bodyworks and corporate headquarters should include space for an art gallery. Tracy, herself an artist, wanted to create a venue for local young artists to show their works. The kickoff show in this new gallery will be an exhibit of drawings, paintings and multimedia art by students attending classes at the Pasadena Arts Council sponsored Children's Center for the Arts. The exhibit will be on view for the month of March and open free to the public during Holmes Body Shop's regular hours. Fourth grade students from Cleveland, Jackson Dan Benino and Hamilton elementary schools have just completed their sessions at the Children's Center. Each session provides all third and Fourth graders enrolled in participating schools with six two hour sessions of art, dance and drama instruction. Sharing the desire of the Pasadena Arts Council Board of Trustees to ensure art experiences are available to young people in our Pasadena Unified School District, Holmes was attracted to the Children's Center project. In addition to the creation of the gallery in Holmes' Colorado Street facility, she is organizing a support group to help recruit volunteers and raise money for Children's Center programing. The Friends of the Children's Center is planning a fund-raiser to be held the afternoon of Sunday, June 9. A family-orienented event celebrating "Children's Day," it will feature activities for children and young adults as well as entertainment and a fine art auction. |
The gallery will showcase art work by third- graders who attend the Children's Center classes this spring. This is an ambitious undertaking and many helping hands are needed. Tracy Holmes invites anyone interested in working on this project to call the Arts Council office and sign up. The Arts Council is applying for public and private-sector grants to fund the 1995-97 Children's Center programming. Classes are held in the former McKinleyJunior High School auditorium complex. The site has been partially restored, but some very expensive work remains to achieve an attractive environment for students as they capture the spirit of creativity and personal achievement. The Pasadena Arts Council has been awarded a $21,000 grant from the National Endowment For the Arts. This grant will be the "seed" money for the 1996-97 program. Plans call for increasing to eight the number of schools served by the program next year. To expand the program and complete the restoration work, many more financial resources will have to be tapped. Establishment of the Friends of the Children's Center will be an important aid in reaching these goals - particularly if enough volunteers come forth to turn this group into a vibrant, successful organization. To learn more about the Children's Center and its Friends, call our office (818/795-825), or stop by. We are just outside the Green Street entrance to the Plaza Pasadena and are open Monday through Friday from 10 am 4 pm. |
