| Award winning novelist Octavia Butler, retiring LA Opera director Peter Hemmings and critically acclaimed soprano Suzanna Guzman are among 13 local individuals and organizations being honored tonight at the Pasadena Arts Council's 35th annual Gold Crown Awards Banquet. Actress Jane Carr will also be on hand at the event, being held in the newly restored Gold Room at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Carr will make a presentation to Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena. He is being given the council's Government in the Arts Award. "Every year we honor the best and the brightest and this is our time to honor the people who have made contributions to the arts, architecture and literature," in the Pasadena area, said Jerri Price, president of the board of trustees. "Pasadena is a very thriving arts city, considering it's size, and some of the arts organizations, such as the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Playhouse, have been around for more than 70 years," she said. "The awards get everyone together who has made an impact." Not everyone honored is nationally known or a wealthy benefactor, Price said. One of this year's honorees is Washington Middle School teacher Cynthia Abbott, who created the glee club and stages musical performances: she is being presented with the Art in Education Award. |
Others being honored at the banquet are; Patron of the Arts Award, Elaine Mramor of Arcadia, as a longtime supporter of, among other organizations, the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Pops Orchestra; Tenth Muse Award, James Folsom, botanical director of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino; President's Award, Cheryl Mead, business manager of the Pasadena Youth Symphony; Artist (Visual) Award, Pasadena watercolorist and artist Joseph Stoddard. The organizations and businesses being recognized are; Business in the Arts Award, Tom and Tracy Holmes of Holmes Body Shops in Pasadena, who have supported children's arts programs in the Pasadena School District and created a gallery in their headquarters on Colorado Boulevard; Community Award, the Knightsbridge Theater in Old Town Pasadena, created by Joseph Stachura, which has staged award-winning productions for the past five years; Recognition Award, The Music Theater of Southern California, which for 15 years has staged high-quality regional musicals and operettas at the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium; and Communications Award, Huntington Advertising and Public Relations. "Pasadena has always been known for it's arts and culture, and also for generous volunteerism and money in support of the arts," said Barbara Cole, executive director of the Pasadena Arts Council. "The council feels that these are the people and organizations that enrich our lives, and they should be recognized." |
